Lake Genevieve - (El Dorado County)
Desolation Wilderness

Getting There

To reach Lake Genevieve, park at the Meeks Bay Trailhead. Meeks Bay is located on the south western shore of Lake Tahoe, California. The trail to Lake Genevieve leads to a pater noster string of lakes including Crag Lake, Hidden Lake, Shadow Lake, Cliff Lake and Stony Ridge Lake.

The Hike

The trail to Lake Genevieve starts on a dirt road and stays flat for the first 1.6 miles. There is ample shade for the majority of this hike. There only two steep climbs and before you know it, you will be at Lake Genevieve. You may find yourself alone at Lake Genevieve as Crag Lake makes a much better camping experience.

The Fishing

The fishing is good at Lake Genevieve for Brown Trout and Brook Trout. Lake Genevieve can be a tricky Lake to fish as the deep water lies just beyond the furthest cast and bushes around the lake make shore access difficult. We hiked into Lake Genevieve with an inflatable raft and used that to get out into the middle of the lake. A float tube will do the trick.

Once afloat, we concentrated on casting near the south end and west shore of Lake Genevieve. I found that fishing red and black ants submerged under the surface with a small split can produce fish. A big green grasshopper slammed onto the surface caught the attention of a nice Brown. We found the fishing at Lake Genevieve to be better than Crag Lake, even though Crag Lake is known to give up larger fish.
