Getting There
The journey to the Treasure Lakes begins at the
South Lake Trailhead located at South Lake, outside
of Bishop California. Take Highway 168 west from Bishop and follow the signs to South Lake.
The Hike
The trail to the Treasure Lakes is a short but moderate hike.
After two miles of hiking you will reach Treasure Lake #2 on the right.
The Fishing
Treasure Lakes numbers one and two, or 'Lower Treasure Lakes' as they
are known now, offer fast action for Rainbow X Golden hybrids in the 7-11 inch range. We did not
see any fish larger than 10 or 11 inches at the Treasure Lakes. The smaller fish were landed
at Lower Treasure Lake number 2.
Most of the fish I caught at the Treasure Lakes were taken on small wet flies
like Hare's Ears or Copper Johns. Scott landed quite a few fish using spinners. All in all, the
fishing was easy for small Goldens and Rainbows.
The Upper Treasure Lakes do not hold fish anymore due to MYLF restoration. We had fished
them in 2000 and could not raise a bite.
